In 2015, I measured my worth in pesos.

In receipts folded inside my wallet.
In coins counted twice before leaving the grocery counter.
In the quiet arithmetic of survival.

₱12,000 a month.
Dreams discounted.
Potential deferred.

I thought income was the ceiling.

Then a phone call crossed an ocean.

Fifteen dollars an hour.
An Australian voice on the other end.
A list of businesses waiting to hear my script.
Yellow Pages.
Cold calls.
Rejections stacked like unopened mail.

And yet — with every dial tone,
a border dissolved.

At ₱45.52 to a dollar,
I did the math.

₱682.80 an hour.

More than a day’s wage earned in sixty minutes from my own home.

But the real exchange rate
wasn’t currency.

It was a belief.

I traded doubt for discipline.
Fear for consistency.
Scarcity for skill.

The world would later shut down.

But my laptop stayed open.
My children’s laughter filled the background.
My hands kept building what prayer had quietly planted years before.

Money is loud.

Freedom is quieter.

It sounds like being present.
Like choosing.
Like not asking permission
to live the life you’ve worked for.

Today, when people ask how much I earn, I smile.

Because I no longer count in pesos or dollars.

I count in mornings unhurried,
in school programs attended,
in fear that no longer visits my doorstep.

The greatest wealth I built was not in my bank account.

It was the distance between who I was and who I decided to become.
